The Royal Air Force Gliding and Soaring Association - the full story.

Updated: Nov 6

Gliding has been a passion that dates back to the early days of the Royal Air Force (RAF). However, it wasn't until the post-World War II era that gliding truly flourished, especially following the pivotal role gliders played in the success of the D-Day landings during the 1939-1945 war. The end of the war saw a surge in interest in gliding, leading to the spontaneous formation of various RAF gliding clubs across the country.

It was in 1949 that a small but dedicated group of gliding enthusiasts took a significant step by establishing an association to further promote and nurture their shared love for the sport. The birth of the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association (RAFGSA) marked a pivotal moment in the history of gliding within the RAF community. The association's inception is humorously captured in the inscription of the Founders' Trophy, which recounts the association's formation 'in a taxi on the way to a Chinese restaurant' - a testament to the spontaneity and passion that drove these individuals.

The RAFGSA's formation not only solidified the bond among gliding enthusiasts but also provided a platform for the growth and development of gliding within the RAF. It served as a hub for like-minded individuals to come together, share experiences, and advance their skills in gliding. The association's establishment marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of RAF gliding, paving the way for a legacy that continues to thrive to this day.
